For a confedience boost, search for first decoy. Mine is in there somewhere. ;D
We really ought to have a sticky in the lodge for everybody's first decoy... No chit chat just the pix :)
I think it's a GREAT idea, Dave, and I REALLY like the "no chit chat" guideline. Just post a picture and what it is, i.e. species (could be important to "state" what it is ;)), and medium.
There's no way I can find a photo of my "first" decoy. It was wood, and I was a young lad, so I'll get this party started with my first foam decoy (C Goldeneye, Nov. 2010)...it hurts a little to look at :-[ ...

Be patient, folks--Dave Sikorski just left here, laughing hysterically at some stuff that was living in the shed--made 1974 or 75, and they are examples of my learning curve-All i have to do now is get him registered up so you all may see my early processing! Oh my, some of these are bowsers!! ::) ;D

Obi Juan,
Call me crazy but I dig that Can. If you ever want to part ways with him let me know - it's damn unique.
Here's mine... took me a while to dig it up... wish I hadn't... it's a mini ringneck (had to tell you because it's that bad :o ). 3 years ago. Then got hooked up with Tom Flemming and this was my latest ringer. Moral of the story --> FIND A MENTOR!!!

This is my first bird. Its supposed to be a redhead but looks like a blue-billed pink head. My kids absolutely hate the fact that it still sits on the entertainment center....they claim its embarrbootying to have it there. First decoy from scratch-1985. A week to carve and paint... in oils. My girlfriend smudged the side pocket when she picked the bird up prior being fully dry. I married her anyway;never let her touch a decoy again, though!
I had painted several dozen spindle carved mallards and divers prior this bird for a forestry Prof. at MSU that I used to hunt with. He had some Miles Pirnie birds that he used as masters. I cleaned-up some of the rough marks on the heads, carved the bill details ,and cleaned-up the bodies and added some Ben Schmidt feather patterns(still a big fan of his decoys and painting style). I was supposed to get half of the decoys on completion of the job, but never saw any of them. He eventually reimbursed me for the paints. They are now in a hunt club in southern Michigan.

Carved him 10 years ago, when I was 10. Its is getting scary because I can talk in decades, getting old! lol The picture was from the 2004 Westlake Show where he won the youth contest, and accully won the bufflehead species in the pool! haha I keep track of all the birds I carve, and When I hit 99, I carved my 100th as a drake buffy with the same pose. Its amazing how much I have improved! Looking at the pictures, you have all improved greatly! Except for Scott Russell, some how he went backwards. :)

And the comment about Scott is hilarious :D :D :D :D

See what happons Andy, I post and get insulted!!! ;) I dont have time during the show for a complete decoy demo :P I could do a couple hour painting demo and paint a bird for yall one night maybe, but I couldnt carve one.

Andy, when you look closely at the feather detail, you will cringe-trust me on this point!

That would be so cool! Don't overextend yourself though because I know how busy all of you are with that show.
If I pick on you it is a good thing....If I dont pick on you is when you need to worry ;)
-
Wish I still had my first. My dad sold the first 4 bluebills I made when I was 12 or 14 and brought me back $40! I've been hooked ever since.
-
This is my first decoy. I finished it about a month ago. It is EPS and Restle coated.
-
I am not a foamer so is EPS something you carve or inject or styrofoam balls you heat up or what? Im lost on that stuff.
-
EPS is beads that are placed in a mold and the mold is boiled, correct?
-
EPS goes in a mold and is boiled. It is a great place to start making decoys. Very forgiving.
-
I carved my fist when I was 15. Did a few after that and got out of it for a good while. Too busy chasing skirts. I gave this one away back then to my now in laws. I think their dog chewing up the bill might be an improvement. Purdy aint it...
-
I was digging around in the barn today and I came across this decoy.
solid White cedar,painted with acylics
This guy was my 1st wood decoy,a real beauty, made back in 2008 when I was looking for something to get into when I retire.
Dig that cool tail section
I guess after seeing him, I have improved a little bit from then.

Everyday is a good day!

This is about 1980...carved out of a couple of 2x4s, painted with house paints and acrylics. My dad owns it.

This was number one and started the obsession.......It's a Dick LeMaster pattern and carved out of bbootywood painted with acrylic's AND it's a minature.

My first carved duck! It is suppose to be a Green Wing Teal but I was happy it looked like a duck (2004).
My second decoy is a mallard still not finished needs painted (2008). Both carvings were part of a decoy carving clbooty.
The shelf is full of projects started and never completed due to frustration, fear of making mistakes, and not truly understanding the steps needed to complete a carving.
After 35 years thinking about retirement so there should be more time to learn how to enjoy my hobby. The advice I was recently given was to allow myself to make mistakes because this is how we learn. Looking forward to a carving clbooty beginning on Monday!

Here's a couple did alright but need a lot of work

other than the eyes being too high on the head..... Whoops, a critique--Gotta stop that.

Well, my first and only carving gives true meaning to the title of this thread, being bold enough to share it. I have never carved before but have a desire to learn and become very good at it. This was December 2013 and a flop of a first attempt.

Way back yesterday, I started this one! Finished it today. My first!

You did an excellent job Shawn, and it looks even better in person.

Thanks, Rick! I can't wait to see your Harli canvas when it's done either!

They're real rough, but they draw Blacks in like bees to honey (even though I try not to shoot them). They're falling apart now, I think I rushed the mastic coats too soon. They've had a rough couple of years, but mostly stood up to it.

I made Blacks because everything (Blacks, Mallards, Teal, Ringnecks, 'Bills) around here will decoy to them.

My first, well the first one that I did with my mentor, a Green wing teal. Did it for the NEA sponsored clbooty through the Ward Foundation. won 2 second place ribbons and a third place at the Chesapeake Challenge, and a 3rd at the PFDA show in Sacramento.

This was my very first back in 2011 I had no clue what I was doing. I had a crab pot buoy and wanted to go hunting for bufflehead which I had no decoys of so I went to work with a pocket knife and I had a piece of balsa lying around that I used for the head and inlaid it into the buoy. After I made this one and wanted to learn more is when I got online and found this place and have improved a lot since then.

Circa 1990. Tupelo and oil paint. Purchased the wood from Mr. Curt Fabre (Curt's Waterfowl Corner) down in Montegut, LA. Hunted over it and several others for many seasons. All were retired years ago. I haven't made any decoys in almost ten years, but I'm currently working on some cork wood ducks to carry in the pirogue this fall.

Neat thread. Lots of great first birds. Most of these first birds are better than my last bird. Kind of hurts my feelings a little. Here is my first attempt.

I'd like to think I've improved from three years ago, but still have a long way to go. Still learning tons on every bird, and trying to take what I have learned and apply it to the next one.

Here's mine ... So far. Still in progress. Made some mistakes I've learned from which resulted in a smallish body and an extreme wing/body shape. Oh well. Gonna finish and paint it.
Bbooty wood and (soon to be) acrylics.

My first. Greenwing teal in cedar. I was asked to help with a junior carving competition because there were more students than anticipated. I had to accept ;D
And I managed to carve my first decoy as well. Won't win any beauty contests. But it's mine.

Doesn't this qualify? It's a duck but not a hunting decoy.
Finally took a picture of my first carving. A mini decoy I made for my Mother for her Xmas present in 1958. I was 12. Carved with an Xacto knife set I bought for scouts. Didn't even know anything about duck hunting back then....just liked birds and carving. I cut the plaque out of plywood with a coping saw, painted the duck black so it would be sort of a shadow box type thing. I later chip carved some patterns in jewelry box lids for Mom but mainly just whittled "stuff" until about 1985 when I started trying to make hunting decoys. I'll see if I have a picture of my first real hunting decoy.

Found a picture of one of my first decoys ... about 1985 ... The GE on the left was one of my first BSC corks. The one on the right is a 2005 (or so) production in tan cork. I took the picture a year or two ago (or maybe more?) to show the change in my style/technique. Still hunting them.
