Repainted storm fronts don't look right to me
« on: July 24, 2014, 11:44:06 AM »
I have plenty of mallards, and paint is cheap (compared to decoys) plus I like hunting over decoys I painted so when storm fronts went on sale cheap, I bought a dozen and was given another for Christmas. Fast forward to "you should probably start getting things ready" season and I tried my hand at painting widgeons. I'm not convinced I pulled it off tho. Any suggestions?  Also, what is the easiest way to paint the heads on widgeons and gadwalls (my next set after this)?

They look okay. What do you think is wrong with them?

The drakes heads and the white wing patches I think are what make it off to me. Not sure if I leave the wing patches that big for vision or cover it some

mighrt help to look at some images, go to a zoo. There are some other areas that need attention, other than those you already addressed. LOOK!

White does not come onto the pocket. It is very forward of where you painted it. Tertials are wrong, bandit mask is shaped incorrectly. Will they work? Probably, but I would repaint them and use this as practice

Those bills look like mallard bills and so does the head shape. That kills even a good paint job for me

Tom, that's probably because that's what they started their lives as--Note curls.
I have repainted a jag of plastique mallards as chiloe widgeon, because they were cheapos, and our host needed decoys that looked like the fowl of argentina.
