Joe Johnson Memorial Canvasback
« on: September 30, 2013, 09:44:40 PM »
Just finished: Joe Johnson memorial Canvasback to be auctioned at the Kalamazoo DU sponsor banquet. I wanted to do something special to honor Joe as we approach the one year anniversary of his pbootying. October 9, 2012 was the day the geese flew by Joe's window at Rose Arbor and escorted him to the bird sanctuary in the heavens. Joe was a dear friend to me and many others that love the great out of doors. He is missed but never forgotten.

For you folks that didn't know Joe......Joe was the director of the Kellogg Bird Sanctuary among many other hats that he wore on behalf of Mother Nature and Waterfowlers.

Beautiful job, Willy! I think you did his memory very proud with that canvasback decoy! I would aggressively bid on that bird!

In an odd twist, I was involved in some restoration and dune stabilization work on the Iron Ore Heritage Trail system in a section that transits the Lake Superior shoreline this summer. It was adjacent the MDOT visitors site here in Marquette. An individual walked-up to our group and began asking questions about our work that were quite well informed and pointed. As we conversed, I discovered that she was the new director of the Kellogg Bird Sanctuary facility, as well as the news on Joe's pbootying.

I worked out there during my first summer out of high school and a year while a freshman in college. I learned a great deal about waterfowl biology from Joe Johnson, as well as Dr. Harold Prince and, then PhD student, Rick Kaminsky(former DU biologist and now Mississippi State researcher).

A couple of gals took Joe's place but didn't last long. The current director is Kara Haas and she is doing a bang up job at the Sanctuary.

WK Kellogg Sanctuary is a great place to visit so if you are ever in the Kalamazoo/ Battle Creek area put that on your list.

Thanks Scott and all. Joe was a dear friend and as October 9 approches it starts anniversary's for the pbootying of three of my closest friends starting with Joe. Tonight is our DU Sponsor dinner and some lucky person will be going home with Joe's Canvasback decoy and Joe will continue to contribute to DU.
