WE are in the process ofdoing some remodeling in the house and currently woking on the living room.  My wife wanted to scrap the fireplace hearth but after looking at it I called the contractor over and had him just sand it down for me so I could get a better look at the wood.  Don't know about any of you guys but it's been a while since I've seen grain this tight.  Had to wet the end to get the grain to stand out.  Beautiful piece of wood..to me anyway ;D

The piece is roughly 5x12 and about 6 feet long.  Think I'm keeping it.

I'm trying to figure out what kind it is.  I originally thought it was some heart pine but it's too soft.  Has to be some kind of cedar or redwood.

Here's a shot of the front.  When I wet it the color has a slight red color to it.

Looks like red cedar to me, you should be able to smell it for sure if cedar.  I have been making a few decoys out of red cedar, it works fine.

It could be old growth douglas fir. I salvaged some beams that looked exactly like that from a barn. The color and grain pattern is identical. I'll post a pic of it for comparison.

This would be my guess, too! Matches the endgrain pattern well.

It is not red cedar, My first thought was Doug Fir.  I am taking a wood ID clbooty and the Douglas fir blocks we have look very similar to that.
