I was wondering if anyone has experience carving a swan from cork?  I was trying to figure out how to cut such a large block on the bandsaw.  Maybe use two blocks standing on edge cut out separately and then laminated?  Not sure.  Also any suggestions on where to get a good pattern?

Thanks!

Brian,
By no means am I an expert but I would think you would need to cut it in two pieces then glue together. I would also think that you would want to hollow it and put on a bottom board otherwise its going to be heavy.

Personally I would go with either a wood decoy and hollow it really thin or better yet a canvas decoy.

My concern on a hollowed cork decoy that large is it could be brittle. Hopefully someone with more experience chimes in.

Use black cork.  Jeff Coats did a few and they look awesome.

Brian, if you can get to the Edgerton, Wisconsin Decoy Show this weekend (just north of Janesville and Beloit), "Mr. Cork", Bob Swann may have the best looking swan decoy I have ever seen and it is hollow cork, no bottom board. Even if Bob doesn't have the decoy there, I know he has a booth for the show. I believe the show is from 8:00am-1:00pm, on the 13th, at the old high school in town.  Mike

Thanks for the info on that show Mike!  Where are you from?  I am just south of the border off of 90.

Foamer would be great, and I think a canvas swan would be even lighter.  Trick is going to get it to self right and float correctly.  Still would be a great project.  Though a wood or cork swan would make a sweet display piece.

Late in the season I hunt with just a few decoys.  I am looking to do a pair of swans, a couple black ducks and a handful of mallards.  I just thought the cork would be a little easier than wood.
